They have finally got back to their dorms in Korea, and it was raining outside.
Donghae looked at the empty bed on the other side of the room and felt the anger boiling in his veins.
Few hours ago, before they got on the plane back to Korea, he saw that girl talking to his Hyukjae. Laughing with his Hyukjae.
And what he hated the most was the fact he didn’t even know her and that when Hyukjae got back to him, he just smiled brightly.
Well, Donghae’s main problem was that even though he did claim Hyukjae as his, between himself and his own mind, and maybe with some fans who either took it as a joke or were just really happy about it.
Hyukjae wasn’t really his, at least not in the sense Donghae wanted him to be.
He was his best friend, yet he couldn’t help but want it to be more than that, even though it should have been more than enough.
He knew it was stupid on his side from the beginning, but when the door was opened and Hyukjae entered the room, Donghae couldn’t help it.
“Hae…?” Hyukjae looked at his friend who sat on his bed looking furiously at the wall above Hyukjae’s.
When Donghae didn’t reply, the blond walked closer and kneeled in front of him, placing his hands on the other’s thighs.
“Hae…what happened…? You’ve been like this ever since we entered the plane…” He bit his lip, worried.
“You are the one to ask.” The other murmured, voice filled with pure sarcasm and a faint touch of pain.
“Of course I ask! You’re my best friend, what is wrong with you today?”
“I SAID NOTHING.”
“Hae look at me, you can’t lie. You should know better.”
“GOD DAMMIT. YOU ARE WRONG WITH ME.” He cried
Donghae stood up, looking away.
“I wish I haven’t met you at all…” He murmured before his voice broke.
“What the…What are you trying to say with that?!” Hyukjae put his fists on his knees before he does something he’d regret later, feeling furious tears were about to drop.
Donghae bit his lip, as more tears escaped the corners of his eyes.
He hated fighting with Hyukjae. He knew it was stupid on his side from the beginning. And how is he going to explain this sudden burst now?
I can’t tell you… I don’t want to ruin it…He was biting hard on his lip, not even realizing it was already starting to bleed.
“Donghae… what the hell is wrong with you?!” Hyukjae asked once again, so desperate that he didn’t realize he was yelling.
He hated fighting his best friend, because it hurt. He didn’t want to loose him.
He knew he couldn’t have him as anything closer than a friend because life is tough when you fall in love with your best friend, but he didn’t want to ruin it.
“LEAVE ME ALONE!” Donghae yelled back but as he did, he fell on his knees next to the other man.
Donghae knew it was stupid on his side from the beginning. Yet he couldn’t stop himself, because he was jealous, and that monster was eating him from inside.
He thought he could do with being best friends, but at times like these, he just felt it isn’t.
He thought that if Hyukjae left him alone for a while, it’d pass but he the moment these words came out of his mouth, Donghae realized – if he doesn’t have him by his side, he has nothing left. If he doesn’t have him by his side, no matter in what way, he wouldn’t survive a single day.
A moment later, both of them, still kneeling on the floor, looked away as they shivered.
None of them yelled nor said anything, the only thing that could be heard in the room, was a soft sobbing sound.
Siwon stared at the HyukHae room through the apperantely half open door, just to be shocked as he saw the two crying silently on the floor.
“Did they fight again?” LeeTeuk whispered from behind him, Siwon nodded.
“I think they did.”
“Let’s go then, they wouldn’t yell anymore.” The leader smirked and Siwon wondered what did that man have on his mind as he did.
Meanwhile, back in the bedroom, a shaking Hyukjae got closer to his best friend, placing his hand on the others’, making him look up.
They just stared at each other’s puffy and swallowed yet shinny eyes for a long minute that seemed like eternity, as if there was no more need for words.
Donghae’s hand flipped under the other’s bigger one, and intertwined their fingers, holding as tight as he could and biting his lower lip as he looked away.
It’s now or never isn’t it?“I’m sorry…” He whispered, the tears never stopped rolling down his cheeks, “Hyukjae, I—“ But he was pulled into a tight embrace.
“I love you…” He heard the words whispered into his hair.
Hyukjae inhaled the sweet scent that was Donghae. He wasn’t sure he he’d ever get this opportunity again.
“I’m sorry…” He whispered, “But…I guess you’ve already known…I understand why you don’t want me around anymore…and…that you wish we hadn’t met…but…” His voice broke as tears started flowing down his cheeks once again,
“I understand…” He choked on his own voice.
Donghae looked up. It was a misunderstanding. I had to be. And it was his fault.
He said these mean words…of course he’d think…wait a minute…did he just say he loves me…?
“Hyukkie…” He whispered looking at the other’s eyes, one hand going up to hold onto his shoulder.
That oh-so-familiar nickname took the blond by surprised.
“Hyukkie I don’t hate you… I’m sorry… I’m sorry I said these…words…I didn’t mean it…Hyukkie…” He had to fix this.
“No…don’t say it Hae, I don’t want you to lie just because you’re feeling guilty—“
There was nothing else left to do.
Donghae crushed their lips together. He had never been as desperate to get a person to understand him, as he was that moment.
His free hand went up to the other’s neck, playing with the bleached hair.
“I didn’t know Hyukkie.” He smiled a little as they parted, for the first time ever since they got back to Korea.
“I didn’t know. It wasn’t the reason I snapped like this… I…well… it’s stupid…I swear it is but… well… you see… at the airport… there was that…translator girl… and you…looked so happy talking to her…and…I guess I’ve overreacted a bit…?”
Hyukjae could feel the tears falling again as he laughed.
“That was it…?”
Donghae nodded as he looked down.
“Hyukkie…I…I’d never say these words to you but… I…thought… It’s messed up. We’re best friends. And I love you. And…now well, you said you love me too but-“
“Hae…you’re mumbling.” Hyukjae giggled as he claimed the other’s lips for a sweet kiss.
“Sorry…” The younger man smiled a little sheepishly.
Few hours later, they were both lying on Donghae’s bed in each other’s embrace.
“You know…” Hyukjae whispered as he played with their intertwined fingers.
“Hmmm?” Donghae brushed the bleached fringe aside so he could see the other man’s eyes.
“We need to thank that translator girl…” Hyukjae smiled, “Huh?”
“Well… if she didn’t talk to me, you wouldn’t have been that jealous, we wouldn’t fight and…I wouldn’t think that you have found out that I like you…and…that you want me to…well…just…eventually…we wouldn’t have been here, like this…now.” He suddenly felt something poking his cheek and realized it was Donghae’s finger.
“Hyukkieeeeeeeeee~~~ you’re so sweet~~~~~ I want to squeez you and eat you and—mphhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh”
Hyukjae couldn’t help but laugh into the kiss. Here he was his Lee Donghae.
One thing was clear. Even misunderstandings can be helpful sometimes, especially if you’re in love with your best friend, who apperantely loves you too. And if you’re name is Lee Hyukjae or Lee Donghae.
